Our Plays

Here at Stagenorth, our plays are our main focus.  Because of the breadth and depth of the area's talent, we have been able to produce plays with up to 70 people involved with a run of shows that bring in more than 1,600 people.  Our goal is to foster an ever-growing pool of actors, designers, costumers, and directors, so we can continue in this path of producing semi-professional theater that runs the gamut of live art.  In the past few years we have tackled classical and contemporary theater, original works, comedies, dramas, farces, and more.   Because of our successes, we are now transitioning to a business whose schedule reflects that core mission of presenting theater.

Second Annual “Writers Read: Around the Table”

February 2-4, 2012

Sponsored by Honest Dog Blog and StageNorth

"Haven't you noticed that food all by itself is really boring to read about? It's everything around the food that makes it interesting. The sociology. The politics. The history."
— Ruth Reichl from her memoir Comfort Me with Apples.

Last February, dozens of regional writers came together for an incredible two evenings, to read and perform their Loves Stories of the Bay.

Honest Dog Blog and StageNorth want to keep that energy going so we're doing it again. For two nights in February writers will read/perform their stories at StageNorth. For added fun, Beth Dooley, author of several cookbooks and food writer in Minneapolis, will be joining us in different capacities — instructor, judge and author.

For this second annual Writers Read event, we've chosen Around the Food as our theme.  We’re looking for funny stories, serious stories, delicious stories — and poems about:

Disastrous dinner parties
The relationship between waiter and diner.
Holiday family meals
Local foods, exotic foods, and the foods that remind us of home
Food disappointments

“The Diary of Anne Frank”

Directed by Heather Tucker

Sponsored by Chicago Iron

February 9-19, 2012

Anne Frank’s diary is among the most enduring documents of the 20th century.  The play was first brought to the stage in 1955, and in 1999 the production was revived and nominated for two Tony Awards.  Don’t miss out on watching the wrenching story of one of the bravest women of recent history.

Auditions December 11 and 12th.

The Seagull”

Written by Anton Chekhov

Directed by Jim Stowell

March 22-April 1, 2012

Auditions February 4 at 2PM and February 5 at 7PM

Hailed as one of the best plays by Chekhov, his first great play lays bare its comedy and its cruelty.  Whether it’s love, sex, fame, or simply a trip into town, each character is denied the thing they most crave.

“Oklahoma!”

Written by Rodgers and Hammerstein

Directed by Liz Woodworth

Sponsored by Edmunds Log Home Restoration

April 26-May 6, 2012

Arguably one of the best musicals by famed duo Rodgers and Hammerstein, Oklahoma tells the story of cowboy Curly MacLain and his romance with farm girl Laurey Williams.  The musical is full of love, laughter, and of course plenty of singing and dancing.  Don’t miss out on this huge production at StageNorth.

Auditions: February 26th and 27th.

“Lend Me a Tenor”

Written by Ken Ludwig

Directed by Artistic Director Noah Siegler

Sponsored by Ashland Baking Company

May 24-June 3, 2012

If you missed Moon over Buffalo, this is your chance to experience the genius that is Ken Ludwig.  It’s 1934, and the renowned tenor Tito Merelli is scheduled to sing the lead in Otello.  Unfortunately, even before the star leaves his hotel room, everything begins to unravel.  The hilarity comes in a chain-reaction of mistaken identity, farcical plot twists, double entendres, and constant entrances and exits through many doors.

Auditions: March 26 and 27th.

“Church Basement Ladies”

Written by Jim Stowell and Jessica Zuehlke

Directed by Jessica Zuehlke

July 12-22, 2012

Church Basement Ladies, a celebration of the church basement kitchen and the women who work there, features four distinct characters and their relationships as they organize the food and the problems of a rural Minnesota church.  From the elderly matriarch of the kitchen to the young bride-to-be learning the proper order of things, the book and music give us a touching, funny look at their lives as we see them handle a record breaking Christmas dinner, the funeral of a dear friend, a Hawaiian Easter Fundraiser, and a steaming hot July wedding.  They stave off potential disasters, share and debate recipes, instruct the young, and keep the Pastor on due course while thoroughly enjoying, (and tolerating) each other. Funny and down to earth, audiences will recognize these ladies as they begin to see the Church year unfold from below the House of God.
